Oarai Isosaki shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture is located along on coast, about 100km from central Tokyo. Worshipers have visited the shrine to pray for family safety and the safety of maritime traffic since ancient times.

Vibrant Colored Sculptures

You will be able to see vibrant colored sculptures in some areas of the shrine, while the layout of the open spaces has a calm atmosphere without excessive decoration. Since these were built during the same period as NIkko Toshogu Shrine, there are similarities in their colorful designs.

The Main Shrine Building

The main shrine building with a thatched roof, was rebuilt in 1730.

Votive Pictures

Votive pictures in the shrine are unique and different from other shrines.  A lot of votive pictures with Anime characters drawn are dedicated at the shrine because this place was the setting of the Anime “GIRLS und PANZER”.

Anchors

A large number of anchors are dedicated after reaching the end of their useful life, at the corner of the shrine, as guardians of maritime traffic.

Torii Gate of Kamiiso

The Torii gate of Kamiiso stands on the reef off the Oarai Coast. This is where the god of Isosaki Shrine appeared on December 29, 856, and is now known as a mystical sunrise spot.
